Uber Black is a premium on-demand ride-hail tier: a nearby driver in a black luxury car, priced dynamically, requested minutes before. A chauffeur service is a pre-booked reservation: a chosen vehicle class, a named chauffeur, a fixed fare, a commitment to a time and place. For a short journey at a quiet hour in a city with deep coverage, Uber Black is usually cheaper and perfectly good. For airport arrivals, fixed-time departures, peak hours, groups, multi-stop days, principals, and any country where the app is thin or absent, the chauffeur is the better and often the cheaper choice. Book a chauffeur or read the comparison.

The two products, defined fairly

Uber's own description of Uber Black is accurate: high-end vehicles, professional drivers, an option to request quiet or luggage help, and the convenience of the app. It is a genuinely good product in the cities where it is dense, and RutzLimo.com's dispatchers use it themselves for a Tuesday-afternoon hop across town. Nothing in this guide pretends otherwise.

A chauffeur service is a different product with a different economic logic. The vehicle and the chauffeur are reserved for you at a specific time; the fare is fixed in advance and includes tolls, fees and gratuity; the pickup is a commitment tracked against your flight; the vehicle class is guaranteed; and the operator is responsible for the journey from confirmation to receipt. The black car service page describes the product; this page compares it.

Price

For a single journey at an off-peak time the app is usually cheaper, sometimes by a third. Dynamic pricing works in your favour when demand is low. For the same journey at a peak - a Friday evening, a rainstorm, the arrival wave at an airport, the end of a concert - the app's fare rises with demand, and the chauffeur's fixed fare, which was set when you booked, is level with it or below. For a journey with a known time, the chauffeur's fare is knowable weeks ahead; the app's is knowable when you open it.

For hourly hire - a day of meetings with several stops - the app has no real equivalent; a sequence of separate rides with waiting at each is far more expensive than an hourly chauffeur with a minimum block, and the car is not outside when you walk out. For groups, one Sprinter is cheaper than three Uber Black rides and keeps the group together. The cost guide gives the bands.

Vehicle certainty

Uber Black promises a vehicle from an approved list; you learn which one when the driver accepts. A chauffeur service promises a class - executive sedan, luxury sedan, executive SUV - and delivers that class or the one above, with the specific model confirmed by dispatch when it matters. For a client's arrival, a family with a pushchair and four cases, or a principal who expects the S-Class, the difference is the whole point. Child seats are fitted at no charge on a chauffeur reservation when they are on it; on the app they depend on the driver.

The airport

This is where the products diverge most. An airport chauffeur is booked with the flight number, follows the airline's live arrival, counts waiting from touchdown with a complimentary allowance, and is at the pre-arranged terminal door - or inside the hall with a name board - when you walk out; the fare was fixed when you booked, before the arrival wave. The app is requested when you have your bags, from the designated ride-hail zone, at whatever the price is at that moment, with a driver who may cancel if a better fare appears, and a wait that at some airports is a walk to a remote lot. At Los Angeles, for example, ride-hail pickups have moved to a remote lot while pre-booked chauffeured cars still collect at the terminal - the airport's own pages set out the arrangements - and the same pattern of ride-hail zones versus pre-arranged car-service pickup applies at most large hubs.

For departures the chauffeur is a scheduled job assigned the evening before; a 4:30 a.m. app request is a hope.

Waiting, changes and cancellations

A chauffeur waits: the allowance at the airport, the grace period at an address, and beyond that a charged wait that dispatch will tell you about before it starts. The app's driver waits a few minutes and then leaves or charges. A chauffeur reservation is changed by message - a new time, a new address, an added stop - and the new total is shown before it applies. A chauffeur reservation is cancelled free outside the city's window; the app's cancellation fee applies after a few minutes. And a chauffeur does not cancel on you; the terms make the operator responsible for the journey, and dispatch reassigns if a chauffeur is delayed.

Receipts, policy and duty of care

For a business traveller the receipt matters as much as the ride. A chauffeur receipt states the journey, the vehicle class, the traveller and, on a corporate account, the cost centre; the invoice is monthly and itemised; and the duty-of-care record - which licensed chauffeur, which insured vehicle, when and where - exists. The app's receipt is a fare, and the travel manager's record is whatever the expense system captured. The Global Business Travel Association's guidance on ground transportation is the reference many programmes work to, and a chauffeur programme meets it by construction.

Discretion and the principal

Chauffeurs assigned to principals are selected and trained for it: no conversation unless initiated, no photographs, no confirmation to anyone of who was in the car, and experience alongside security teams. The app's driver is a professional, but is not selected for your passenger and does not know who they are. For public figures, executives with a protection detail and anyone whose movements are not public, the luxury chauffeur service and the event and VIP team exist for exactly this.

International coverage

Uber operates in many countries and not in many others, and where it operates the premium tier is often absent or thin outside the largest cities. A traveller landing in a city where the app does not work, or works differently, or has a two-hour wait at midnight, is back to the taxi rank. A global chauffeur service covers 107 countries on one account with one standard, fulfilled through a vetted network, and the traveller never has to find out which kind of city they have landed in.

When Uber Black is the right choice

Honestly: a short daytime journey in a city with dense coverage, when you are travelling light, when you are flexible about the vehicle and a few minutes' wait, when a surge would not ruin your day, and when nobody's impression of you depends on the car. Also for the spontaneous journey no one could have booked - the restaurant that ran late, the change of plan. Chauffeur clients use the app for those and the chauffeur for the rest, and the rest is where the money and the risk are.

How to decide in ten seconds

Is there a flight, a ship or a fixed time on either end? Chauffeur. Is it peak hour, bad weather or an event day? Chauffeur. More than two stops, or more than four people, or heavy luggage? Chauffeur. A client, a candidate, a principal or a first-time visitor in the car? Chauffeur. A country where you do not know how the app behaves? Chauffeur. None of those, and you are standing on a city pavement at 2 p.m. with a bag over your shoulder? Open the app.

What the app does better

It is worth being specific, because the chauffeur trade sometimes pretends the app has no virtues. The app is faster for the unplanned journey; nobody can pre-book a change of mind. It is cheaper off-peak for a single short ride. It needs no phone call and no confirmation email. Its map shows the car approaching, which a chauffeur's dispatch message does less prettily. And in the densest cities its coverage at 2 p.m. on a weekday is deeper than any single operator's. Chauffeur clients should use it for those journeys and feel no guilt.

What the chauffeur does that the app structurally cannot

The app matches a rider to whichever driver is nearest at the moment of the request; that is its whole design, and it is why it cannot promise a vehicle, a driver, a time or a price in advance. A chauffeur service is the opposite design: it commits a specific vehicle and a specific chauffeur to a specific time and place, and prices that commitment. Everything on the chauffeur side of the table above follows from that one difference - the fixed fare, the guaranteed class, the flight tracking, the wait, the name board, the responsibility. The about page describes how RutzLimo.com delivers the commitment in 107 countries through a vetted network, and the fleet guide describes the classes it commits.

The airport case, once more

Because the airport is where travellers most often choose wrongly, the sequence is worth spelling out. With a chauffeur: the flight lands early; the pickup is called forward; you clear customs; the chauffeur is at the door dispatch told you, or inside the hall with your name; the bags go in the boot; the fare was fixed last week. With the app: the flight lands early; you clear customs; you find the ride-hail zone, which at some airports is a shuttle or a long walk; you request; the price is what the arrival wave has made it; a driver accepts, or cancels for a better fare; you wait; you find the car among forty others. Both work. Only one of them works the same way every time, and after a nine-hour flight that is the one to book.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is a chauffeur always more expensive than Uber Black?

No. Off-peak, for a short journey, Uber Black is usually cheaper. At peak, at airports on a busy wave, for multi-stop days and for groups, the chauffeur's fixed fare is level or below, and it does not surge.

Can I book Uber Black in advance for an airport pickup?

The app offers scheduled rides in some cities, but the driver is assigned close to the time and the fare is not fixed in the way a chauffeur reservation is. A chauffeur is a named assignment made the evening before, flight-tracked, with waiting from touchdown.

Does the chauffeur's fare include the tip?

Yes. A standard gratuity is included in every RutzLimo.com fare; nothing is expected at the kerb. The app prompts for a tip after the ride.

Which is better for a group?

A chauffeured Sprinter, almost always: one vehicle, one fare, the group together, the luggage in a bay. Several Uber Black rides cost more and split the group.

Which is better in a country I do not know?

A chauffeur booked on a global account. The vehicle class, the pickup rules and the fare are the same as at home, and you do not have to discover whether the app operates there, or how.
