Hiring a private driver for a day is the oldest product in chauffeured transport and still one of the most useful: a vehicle and a professional chauffeur at your disposal from the first pickup to the last drop, for a day of meetings, a day of sightseeing, a wedding, a site tour or a road trip. It is priced as a package rather than by the hour, and the package differs by region, vehicle and season. This article sets out what a day costs across the markets we serve, what the number includes, and how to plan a day so that it is worth the money. All figures are indicative; the exact price for your day is fixed in the booker before you confirm.

A private driver for a full day - eight to ten hours in an executive sedan - costs roughly US$975-1,950 in North America, US$900-1,800 in Western Europe, US$630-1,275 in the Gulf, US$675-1,500 in Asia-Pacific and US$525-1,050 in Latin America. An SUV adds about 25 percent; a Sprinter van roughly doubles the sedan rate. The package includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, fuel, insurance, the chauffeur's meals and standard mileage; it excludes venue parking, tolls outside the metro area and overtime beyond the booked hours. Our product is on the private chauffeur service page.

What counts as a day

In the industry a "day" is a block of eight, nine or ten hours, depending on the operator and the city, starting when the chauffeur arrives at the first address and ending at the last drop. The hourly chauffeur service page explains how the clock runs; the day rate is simply a discount on that clock for booking the whole of it. Beyond the block, overtime is charged in half-hour or hour increments at the hourly rate for the vehicle. A day that starts at 8 am and ends at midnight is not a day rate; it is a day rate plus six hours of overtime, and it is usually cheaper to book it as sixteen hours from the start, which dispatch will suggest. Mileage within the metropolitan area is included; a day that covers three hundred kilometres to a vineyard and back may carry a distance supplement, which is stated before the booking is confirmed.

The spread within each region reflects the city and the season. London, New York, Zurich, Geneva, Tokyo, Singapore and Sydney sit at the top of their bands; secondary cities at the bottom. A Saturday in June in a wedding city is at the top; a Tuesday in February at the bottom. The general shape of chauffeur pricing, including the hourly and transfer bands, is in how much does a limo cost.

What is inside the number

A full-day rate from a licensed operator includes the chauffeur for the block of hours, the vehicle, fuel or charging, commercial insurance, taxes, the chauffeur's meals and breaks, standard metropolitan mileage, still water and the usual amenities. In North America it includes gratuity, which is customary; in Europe, Asia and the Gulf it does not, and a tip is welcome but not expected. What it does not include: parking at venues that charge (passed through at cost), tolls on long-distance routes outside the metro area, a second chauffeur for days over fourteen hours where the law requires one, and any admission tickets or meals for the passengers. The chauffeur cost guide has a checklist for reading any quote.

The kinds of day people book

The business day. Six or eight meetings across a city, with the chauffeur waiting at each door and the bags in the car. This is the roadshow, the site-visit tour, the client day, and it is the largest single use of the day rate. A corporate account sets preferences once and bills monthly; the executive car service page covers the product.

The touring day. Sightseeing with a chauffeur who knows the region: the wine country from San Francisco, the Cotswolds from London, Tuscany from Florence, the Blue Mountains from Sydney, the cenotes from Cancun, Hoover Dam and Red Rock from Las Vegas. The chauffeur is not a licensed guide in most jurisdictions, but they know where to park, where to eat and when the crowds arrive.

The wedding day. The couple's car from the morning to the last dance, usually ten to twelve hours, with ribbons and a bottle. The wedding limo service page sets out the packages.

The family day. A day at the theme parks, the museums or the beach with a car and a chauffeur waiting, child seats fitted, the stroller in the boot. Parents who have tried it rarely go back.

The road trip. A one-way day between cities - London to Edinburgh, Los Angeles to San Francisco, Milan to Zurich - with stops on the way. Priced by distance rather than hours, and the long-distance transfer page explains how.

Multi-day and touring rates

A driver for several consecutive days is quoted as a package with a discount that grows with the length. As a guide, five consecutive days run about 4.2 times the single-day rate; a week about 5.5 times. Multi-day tours that leave the metropolitan area - a week through the Scottish Highlands, ten days across Andalusia, a circuit of the Golden Triangle in India - add the chauffeur's accommodation and meals on the road, which are quoted at cost or as a fixed nightly supplement. The private chauffeur service page covers touring; the destinations page lists the cities where a touring chauffeur can be based.

Regional notes

North America. The highest day rates, driven by wages, insurance and vehicle costs; gratuity included. SUVs are the default in many cities and the day rate reflects it. Long distances - a day rate in Texas or California may cover four hundred kilometres - are handled by a mileage cap stated in the confirmation.

Western Europe. Similar to North America in the capitals and cheaper in the provinces. Distances are shorter and mileage caps rarely bite. Touring days in Italy, France and Spain are among the most popular products in the network.

The Gulf. The best value in the world for the vehicle you get: a day in an S-Class in Dubai costs what a day in an E-Class costs in Frankfurt. The road network is fast and a day covers a great deal of ground; Dubai to Abu Dhabi and back with a full day at the Louvre or the Grand Mosque is a standard booking.

Asia-Pacific. Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney at the top; Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Jakarta at the bottom, where a day with a driver costs less than a European airport transfer. In India, the touring day with a driver is the standard way to travel between cities and the rates are the lowest in the network for a very good product.

Latin America. The lowest rates, with the caveat that the vehicle class is often one step below what the same money buys in Europe. Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Santiago have full fleets; the resort coasts have SUVs and Sprinters.

How to get the most from the day

  • Give the chauffeur the schedule the night before. Addresses, times, contacts. Dispatch loads it and the chauffeur plans the routes.
  • Build in the waiting. A day of meetings is a day of waiting for the chauffeur, and that is what the day rate is for; do not feel you need to release the car between appointments.
  • Use the boot. Coats, bags, samples, shopping, the children's things. The car is your base for the day.
  • Ask the chauffeur. Where to eat near the third meeting, which entrance to the museum is quieter, whether the coast road is worth the extra twenty minutes. They know.
  • Tell dispatch if the day changes. A meeting cancelled, a dinner added. The fare adjusts and the chauffeur is told.
  • Book the airport transfer separately if the day starts or ends there. A transfer at a fixed fare plus a day rate from the hotel is usually cheaper than a day rate that starts at the airport with a long wait for the flight.

Booking

In the booker, choose "as directed" or the full-day option, the vehicle and the start time and address; the day rate shows. Add the schedule in the notes. The chauffeur's details arrive by text on the morning. The fleet page lists the vehicles; the airports page and destinations page show where a day can start.

Three days, priced

A roadshow day in Frankfurt. Pickup at the airport hotel at 7:30, five meetings across the Bankenviertel and the Messe, a working lunch, drop at the airport at 6 pm. Ten hours in an E-Class at about EUR 950; the same day as five transfers would run EUR 900 with four waits and nowhere for the bags. The GBTA surveys of managed travel show that the day rate is the product corporate travel desks choose for any day with more than three ground movements, and the arithmetic above is why.

A touring day in Tuscany. Pickup at a Florence hotel at 9, Siena, San Gimignano, lunch at a vineyard the chauffeur knows, Monteriggioni, back by 6. Nine hours in a V-Class for a family of five at about EUR 850, with the wine in the boot and nobody driving the hill roads. A licensed guide can be added for the towns.

A wedding day in Toronto. Pickup at 10 for the bride's party, the ceremony at 2, photographs at the park, the reception at 6, the couple to the hotel at midnight. Fourteen hours in a luxury sedan with ribbons at about CAD 2,100, booked as fourteen hours from the start rather than a day plus overtime. The wedding limo service page sets out the full package.

Where the day rate is not the answer

Two situations look like a day and are not. A single meeting in the morning and a flight in the evening is two transfers with a gap, and the transfers are cheaper than a day rate for a car that sits outside a hotel for five hours. A long one-way journey with no stops - London to Manchester, say - is a distance-priced transfer, and the global chauffeur service page explains how inter-city runs are quoted. Dispatch will tell you which product is cheaper for the day you describe; the contact page reaches a person who can price both.

The chauffeur's view of a good day

A chauffeur on a day booking wants three things: the schedule the night before, a realistic gap between stops, and a passenger who says when plans change. Given those, the day runs itself. The chauffeur will have checked each address, planned the parking, found the entrance, and worked out where to wait without blocking a loading bay. The passenger's part is to treat the car as a base and the chauffeur as a colleague for the day, which is the arrangement the what is a chauffeur article describes, and which is the reason people who have used a private driver for a day rarely go back to a string of taxis.

Tipping, receipts and the small print

In North America the day rate includes gratuity and the receipt says so; a passenger who wants to add more may. In Europe, the Gulf and Asia the chauffeur will not expect a tip and will be pleased by one at the end of a good day. The receipt for a day booking itemises the hours, any overtime, parking passed through at cost, and any supplements agreed during the day, and it arrives by email within the hour; for a corporate account it carries the cost centre. Cancellation of a day booking is free up to twenty-four hours before the start in most cities and forty-eight for multi-day and touring bookings, and the FAQ sets out the terms. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data on chauffeur wages is the honest explanation of why a day with a professional cannot cost what a day with a gig driver costs.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How many hours is a full day?

Eight, nine or ten depending on the city and operator; ours is ten in most markets. Beyond the block, overtime is charged in half-hour increments at the hourly rate.

Does the day rate include the chauffeur's lunch?

Yes. The chauffeur's meals and breaks are inside the rate; the passengers' meals and any admission tickets are not.

Is mileage limited?

Standard metropolitan mileage is included. A day that leaves the metro area for a long distance carries a stated supplement, shown before you confirm.

Can the driver act as a tour guide?

Chauffeurs know their regions and will point things out, but they are not licensed guides in most jurisdictions. For a guided tour, a licensed guide can be added to the booking in many cities.

How far ahead should I book a day?

A few days in most cities; a week or more for a Saturday in wedding season, a convention week or a touring day in high season.

Is a multi-day driver cheaper per day?

Yes. Five consecutive days run about 4.2 times the single-day rate, and a week about 5.5 times.
