Airport transfers · 2026-09-19 · 8-minute read

Tenerife South (TFS, Reina Sofia) is the airport for the island's resort coast, twenty minutes from Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje, and it handles the great majority of the British, Irish, German and Scandinavian holiday traffic that makes Tenerife the busiest of the Canary Islands. It is a single-terminal airport with a simple arrivals hall, a good motorway to the resorts and a transfer market that is mature and reasonably priced. This guide explains how a private transfer works at TFS, what it costs, and how to choose between it, the taxi rank, the shared coach and the island's second airport in the north.

Tenerife South has a single terminal; arrivals exit into a public hall where a pre-booked chauffeur waits with a name board. Drive times: Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas 15-20 minutes, Costa Adeje 20-30, Los Gigantes 40-50, Santa Cruz 50-60, Puerto de la Cruz 60-75. Indicative private fares: EUR 45-80 for a sedan or SUV to the southern resorts, EUR 90-150 to the north; a Sprinter for a family or group EUR 80-180. Book on the airport limo service page with the flight number and the fare is fixed in euros.

The airport

TFS sits on the south coast between the resorts and the mountains, with a terminal that was expanded in the 2010s and is now large enough for its traffic except in the winter peak weeks. Arrivals from the EU and the UK clear passport control (non-EU passengers, including British ones since 2021, go through the non-EU lane, which can be slow on a Saturday), collect bags, and exit into the arrivals hall. There is one hall, with the car-hire desks on one side and the tour-operator representatives on the other; a pre-booked chauffeur stands in the hall with a name board and the morning text says where. The airport's own passenger information is on the Aena site, which runs all of Spain's airports, and it lists the current works and the taxi rank location.

Outside, the taxi rank is directly in front of the terminal, the coach bays are to the side, and the short-stay car park where most chauffeurs leave their vehicles is a two-minute walk. TFS has none of the sales-desk gauntlet of the Caribbean airports; the arrival is straightforward.

The resorts, and how far each is

The southern resorts are close and the northern ones are not, and the motorway (the TF-1) is good all the way round the south and west.

DestinationTypical drive time
Los Cristianos15-20 min
Playa de las Americas15-25 min
Costa Adeje (including La Caleta, Playa del Duque)20-30 min
El Medano10-15 min
Golf del Sur / San Miguel10-15 min
Playa Paraiso / Callao Salvaje30-40 min
Los Gigantes / Puerto de Santiago40-50 min
Guia de Isora (Abama, Ritz-Carlton)35-45 min
Santa Cruz50-60 min
Puerto de la Cruz60-75 min
La Laguna55-70 min

The northern resorts and the capital are best served by Tenerife North (TFN, Los Rodeos), which has a growing schedule from the UK and mainland Spain; for Puerto de la Cruz it saves an hour each way. Where the flight schedule allows, fly into the airport nearest the hotel; where it does not, the chauffeured transfer from TFS to the north is a comfortable hour on a motorway with a view of Teide.

The options and what they cost

The taxi rank. Licensed taxis with a meter and posted supplements. About EUR 30-40 to Los Cristianos or Playa de las Americas, EUR 40-55 to Costa Adeje, EUR 75-95 to Los Gigantes, EUR 90-110 to Santa Cruz. Reliable, and the queue on a Saturday afternoon in winter can be half an hour.

The tour-operator coach. Included in package holidays; a coach that visits several resorts and can take over an hour to reach a hotel twenty minutes away.

The shared shuttle. EUR 10-20 per person to the southern resorts, sold online; same pattern.

The bus. TITSA's airport routes to Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje and Santa Cruz are cheap and frequent, and fine for a solo traveller without much luggage.

The private transfer. Indicatively, in euros:

  • Sedan or SUV to Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas or Costa Adeje: EUR 45-80.
  • Sedan or SUV to Los Gigantes or Guia de Isora: EUR 70-120.
  • Sedan or SUV to Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz: EUR 90-150.
  • Sprinter (up to 14, with luggage) to the southern resorts: EUR 80-140; to the north EUR 150-220.
  • Round trip: 10 percent less than two one-ways.

The private transfer costs EUR 15-40 more than the taxi to the southern resorts and buys the name board, the chosen vehicle, child seats fitted, and a fare fixed before you fly. The general comparison is in airport transfer vs taxi, and the European price context in how much does a limo cost.

Which vehicle

A couple fits a sedan; a family of four with cases fits an SUV or an executive van; two families, a golf group with clubs or a wedding party fits a Sprinter. Spanish law requires child seats for children under 135 cm and the chauffeur fits them when they are requested at booking, at no charge. The fleet page lists capacities.

The return transfer

Departures from TFS are the airport's weak point: the security and passport lanes in the terminal are stretched on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in winter, when the British and German flights leave in a bank, and the non-EU passport queue on the way out can be long. Allow two and a half hours at the airport for a UK flight in the peak weeks and two hours otherwise. From Costa Adeje that means a pickup three hours before the flight; from Los Gigantes, three and a half; from Puerto de la Cruz, four. The chauffeur proposes the time when the return is booked; the IATA baggage guidance is the reference for what goes in the hold.

Weddings, golf and the island

Tenerife is a destination-wedding and golf island. The wedding venues cluster in Costa Adeje and Guia de Isora, and the pattern is a luxury sedan for the couple and a Sprinter or minicoach for the guests; the wedding limo service page covers it. The golf courses - Abama, Golf Costa Adeje, Golf del Sur, Buenavista - are all within forty minutes of TFS, and a Sprinter with the clubs in the back is the standard vehicle for a golf group. For a day out - Teide National Park and the cable car, Masca and the Teno cliffs, La Laguna and the north coast, the Anaga mountains - a chauffeur for the day is EUR 350-650 and saves the hire-car anxiety on the mountain roads.

Cruise passengers

Santa Cruz is a busy winter cruise port for the Canaries itineraries, and transfers between TFS and the port (an hour) and between the port and the southern resorts for pre- and post-cruise stays are routine; the cruise port transfers page covers timing.

Booking

Enter TFS, the flight number, the hotel's full name and resort area, passengers and bags, and the vehicle in the booker. The fare is shown in euros and fixed. The chauffeur's name, photo, vehicle and meeting point arrive by text on the morning of arrival. Tenerife North, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are on the airports page, and the Canary and mainland Spanish cities on the destinations page.

Arriving in the winter peak

Tenerife's high season is the northern winter, from late October to Easter, when the island is the warmest place in Europe and the Saturday arrival bank at TFS is the busiest of the year. In those weeks the non-EU passport lane for British passengers can take an hour, the taxi rank queue matches it, and the arrivals hall is at capacity. A pre-booked chauffeur waits within the allowance, and the how airport transfers work article explains how the waiting is handled; the Aena site publishes the terminal's current arrangements, including the works that have been under way on the departures side.

The resorts, briefly, for a first visit

Los Cristianos is the older resort town with the ferry port for La Gomera, a working harbour and a promenade; it suits older visitors and families who want a town. Playa de las Americas is the entertainment resort, with the Veronicas strip and the larger hotels; it suits younger visitors. Costa Adeje is the upmarket end, with the five-star hotels around Playa del Duque and La Caleta, the best restaurants and the calmest beaches; it is where most luxury and wedding visitors stay. El Medano is the windsurfing town beside the airport, low-key and local. Los Gigantes is the quiet west-coast resort under the cliffs, a longer transfer and worth it for the view. Guia de Isora is the Ritz-Carlton Abama and its golf course, a resort of its own. Puerto de la Cruz in the north is the original Tenerife resort, greener, cooler and older-fashioned, served better from Tenerife North.

Inter-island transfers

Visitors combining Tenerife with La Gomera take the ferry from Los Cristianos, and a transfer from TFS to the ferry terminal (twenty minutes, timed to the sailing) is routine; on La Gomera a chauffeur meets the ferry at San Sebastian. Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are reached by inter-island flight from Tenerife North, and the transfer between the two Tenerife airports (an hour) is a common booking for those connecting. The airports page lists the islands' airports and the destinations page the resort towns.

Business travel and the island's other visitors

Tenerife is not only a holiday island. Santa Cruz is the capital of the western Canaries with a port, a university, a conference centre and the regional government; the Adeje hotels host conferences and incentive groups through the winter; and the island's astronomers at the Teide observatory, its film crews and its property market bring visitors who are working rather than resting. For them the chauffeured transfer is the same product as anywhere: a corporate account, a fixed fare, a chauffeur who knows the roads, and a receipt in euros. The executive car service page sets it out, and the private driver for a day article covers the day rate for a site tour of the island, which at EUR 350-650 is one of the better-value products in the European network. The how much does a limo cost article puts the Canaries at the lower end of the Western European band, which is where they belong.

Accessibility

Tenerife's resorts are among the most accessible in Europe, with flat promenades in Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje and a large market in accessible holidays, and the transfer fleet reflects it: wheelchair-accessible vans with a lift or ramp are available at TFS when booked in advance, and the airport's assistance service meets flights at the gate. Tell dispatch at booking what is needed - a folding chair in the boot, a transfer chair, a full lift vehicle - and the right vehicle is sent; the contact page reaches a person who can confirm the details for a specific hotel, since not every resort's forecourt suits a lift vehicle. The fleet page lists the accessible options.
