Airport transfers · 2026-09-19 · 8-minute read

Dubai International (DXB) is the busiest airport in the world for international passengers, the Emirates hub, and an airport that works: the terminals are large and efficient, the taxis are honest and metered, the roads to the city are twelve lanes wide, and the chauffeured fleet - S-Classes and GLSs where Europe would send E-Classes - is the newest and the best value in the network. The questions for a visitor are practical: which terminal, how long to the Marina at 6 pm, whether to take the taxi or the private car, and how the fares compare in dirhams. This guide answers them. The city's second airport, Al Maktoum at Dubai World Central, has its own article.

DXB has three terminals: Terminal 3 (Emirates and flydubai's codeshares, the largest), Terminal 1 (most other international carriers) and Terminal 2 (flydubai and regional carriers, on the north side of the field). A pre-booked chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall of your terminal with a name board. Drive times: Deira and Bur Dubai 10-20 minutes, Downtown and DIFC 15-25, Jumeirah 20-30, the Marina and JBR 30-45, the Palm 30-45, Abu Dhabi 75-100 - longer in the evening peak. Indicative fares: executive sedan AED 150-250 to Downtown, AED 200-320 to the Marina; luxury sedan AED 250-400 and AED 320-500; SUV AED 200-320 and AED 260-420. The metered taxi is AED 50-90 to Downtown. Book on the airport limo service page; Dubai is on the destinations page.

The terminals

Terminal 3 is Emirates' terminal and one of the largest buildings in the world, with Concourses A, B and C; arrivals clear passport control (smart gates for many nationalities; the queue in the early-morning bank from Europe and the late-evening bank from Asia can take forty minutes), collect bags in a hall with dozens of carousels, and exit into a wide arrivals hall with the hotel desks, the car-hire counters and the cafes. Terminal 1 handles most of the other international carriers - British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Qatar, Turkish, the Indian and Asian carriers - and has its own arrivals hall on the south side. Terminal 2, across the field on the north side, handles flydubai and the regional carriers to Iran, Central Asia, Russia and Africa, and is a twenty-minute drive from Terminals 1 and 3. Airlines rarely move, and the airport's own guidance lists them; dispatch confirms from the flight number. A pre-booked chauffeur stands in the arrivals hall at a named point - a specific exit or cafe - with a name board; the halls at Terminal 3 are wide, and the morning text gives the exit number.

Drive times

DXB sits in the north-east of the city, beside the old districts; the new city stretches forty kilometres south-west along Sheikh Zayed Road.

Sheikh Zayed Road is the spine and is congested in both peaks; a chauffeur who works the city uses Al Khail Road and the Mohammed bin Zayed Road for the Marina and the Palm when the spine is slow. The Salik road tolls are included in the fare.

The taxi, and the honest comparison

Dubai's taxis - cream-coloured, RTA-regulated, metered, with a fixed airport surcharge - are among the best in the world: honest, plentiful, air-conditioned and cheap, at about AED 50-90 to Downtown and AED 90-130 to the Marina. The rank outside each terminal has a dispatcher and a queue that in the peaks runs to twenty minutes. A private transfer at AED 150-250 to Downtown costs two to three times the taxi and buys the name board in a very large hall, the vehicle - an S-Class or a GLS where the taxi is a Camry - the flight tracking, the fixed fare, and a chauffeur who knows the hotel's entrance on a road system that confuses newcomers; the general comparison is in airport transfer vs taxi, and in Dubai the taxi wins more often than in most cities for a solo traveller with one bag. For a family, a business traveller, a VIP or anyone arriving at 2 am, the private transfer.

What a private transfer costs

Dubai's chauffeured fleet runs a class above the rest of the world for the money: the executive tier is the S-Class, the Lexus LS or the GLS, and the luxury tier begins at the Maybach. Indicatively, in dirhams:

  • Executive sedan (S-Class, LS) to Downtown, DIFC or the Creek: AED 150-250; to the Marina or the Palm AED 200-320.
  • Luxury sedan (Maybach, 7 Series long) to Downtown: AED 250-400; to the Marina AED 320-500.
  • Executive SUV (GLS, Escalade, Range Rover) to Downtown: AED 200-320; to the Marina AED 260-420.
  • Ultra-luxury (Rolls-Royce, Bentley) to Downtown: AED 600-1,000.
  • Executive van (V-Class, up to 6) to Downtown: AED 200-300; to the Marina AED 260-400.
  • Sprinter (up to 14) to Downtown: AED 350-550; to the Marina AED 450-700.
  • Sedan to Abu Dhabi: AED 450-700; SUV AED 550-850.
  • Hourly, sedan: AED 150-250, three-hour minimum; full day AED 1,200-2,000.

Salik tolls and airport fees are included; gratuity is not expected and is welcome. The Gulf's place in the world bands is in how much does a limo cost, and the luxury car service article explains why a first-time visitor should not be surprised by the car that meets them.

RTA licensing

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority licenses every chauffeured vehicle in the emirate under its limousine regulations: the operator holds a limousine permit, the vehicles are registered and inspected, the chauffeurs hold RTA permits with training and background checks, and the vehicles carry the RTA's plates. The what is a chauffeur article describes the general standard; the RTA's is one of the strictest in the world, and the airport's ground-transport rules are enforced. Rideshare in Dubai operates under the same RTA framework with licensed limousine-permit vehicles, which is why its cars are Lexuses and Camrys rather than private vehicles, and its prices sit between the taxi's and the chauffeur's.

The districts, from a chauffeur's seat

Deira and Bur Dubai are the old city on either side of the Creek, with the souks, the older hotels and the shortest transfer. Downtown is the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, the Address and Armani hotels and the fountain. DIFC and Business Bay are the financial district and the office towers, with the Four Seasons, the Ritz-Carlton and the newer hotels. Jumeirah is the beach road, the Burj Al Arab, the Madinat Jumeirah and the villas. Al Barsha is the Mall of the Emirates and the mid-range hotels. The Palm is Atlantis, the One&Only, the Waldorf Astoria and the fronds' villas. The Marina and JBR are the towers, the beach walk and the largest concentration of hotels in the city. Bluewaters is the Ain Dubai wheel and the Caesars hotels. Expo City and Dubai South are the new district by Al Maktoum airport. The destinations page lists the emirate.

Business travel

Dubai's corporate travel runs on DIFC's banks and funds, the free zones' regional headquarters, the Jebel Ali port and free zone, the exhibitions at the World Trade Centre and Expo City, and the airline itself; the corporate account handles dirham or dollar billing across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Doha, and the executive car service page sets out the product. GITEX, Arab Health, the Dubai Airshow, the Gulfood and the World Trade Centre's calendar fill the fleet in the winter season, and the how early to book article sets out the notice. The summer, from June to September, is the quiet season and the bottom of the band.

Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates

The transfer from DXB to Abu Dhabi - seventy-five minutes to a hundred on the E11 - is one of the largest inter-city markets in the network, for business travellers who fly Emirates into Dubai and work in the capital, and for visitors to Yas Island's parks and the Louvre; the global chauffeur service page explains the pricing and the destinations page lists Abu Dhabi. Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah to the north are thirty to eighty minutes and priced by distance; Oman's border at Hatta is ninety minutes.

The return transfer

DXB's departures are efficient - Terminal 3's check-in and security are among the fastest in the world for the volume - and the airport recommends three hours for long-haul flights. From Downtown that means a pickup three and a half hours before departure in the evening peak; from the Marina, four. The chauffeur proposes the time; the IATA baggage guidance applies, and Dubai's customs rules on medicines are worth checking before travel.

Private aviation

Al Maktoum's VIP terminal at DWC and the executive-flight terminal at DXB handle Dubai's private-jet traffic, which in the winter season is among the heaviest in the world; ramp-side pickup is standard and the private jet and FBO transfers page covers it, with the Rolls-Royce and the Maybach as the usual vehicles.

Booking

Enter DXB, the flight number, the hotel's name and district (several brands have three or four properties in Dubai), passengers and bags, and the vehicle in the booker. The fare is shown in dirhams and fixed. The chauffeur's name, photo, vehicle and exit number arrive by text on the morning. Al Maktoum, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah are on the airports page.

Two transfers, priced

A banker landing from London at Terminal 3 at 7 am for a day in DIFC: an executive sedan - an S-Class - at about AED 200 to a DIFC hotel, met at the exit number in the text, twenty minutes on Sheikh Zayed Road in the tail of the morning peak, on a corporate account with the return booked for the evening flight. A family of five landing from Mumbai at Terminal 1 at 1 am for a week on the Palm: an executive SUV with a child seat at about AED 300 to Atlantis, met at the exit, thirty-five minutes on Al Khail Road with the Salik included, against a taxi at about AED 110 and the question of whether it takes five with five cases at that hour. The Sprinter limo article covers the vehicle for a larger family and the private driver for a day article the day rate for Abu Dhabi, the desert and the northern emirates.

The short version

Three terminals, Terminal 3 for Emirates; the chauffeur meets you at a numbered exit in a very wide hall with a name board; the taxi is honest and cheap and fine for one; the private transfer is AED 150-320 in a car that would be the luxury tier in Europe; Downtown is twenty minutes off-peak and the Marina forty; the fare is fixed with the tolls included. Give the flight number and the district, and the booker shows the exact fare in dirhams.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Where does the chauffeur meet me at Dubai airport?

In the arrivals hall of your terminal - Terminal 3 for Emirates, Terminal 1 for most other international carriers, Terminal 2 for flydubai - at a named exit, with a name board. Terminal 3's hall is very wide; the morning text gives the exit number.

How much is a private transfer to the Marina?

About AED 200-320 in an executive sedan - which in Dubai is an S-Class or a Lexus LS - fixed, including Salik tolls and the meet-and-greet. An SUV is AED 260-420.

Are Dubai taxis good?

Among the best in the world - honest, metered, air-conditioned and cheap, at AED 50-90 to Downtown. For a solo traveller with one bag the taxi is a fair choice; the private transfer buys the vehicle, the name board and the flight tracking.

Can you take me to Abu Dhabi from the airport?

Yes - seventy-five to a hundred minutes on the E11, AED 450-700 in a sedan, tolls included. It is one of the largest inter-city markets in the network.

Why is the executive car in Dubai an S-Class?

Lower labour and fuel costs and a newer fleet mean the Gulf's executive tier is Europe's luxury tier for the same money. The luxury tier begins at the Maybach.

How early should I leave for a flight from DXB?

Three hours at the terminal for a long-haul flight, plus the drive - thirty minutes from Downtown off-peak, fifty in the peak; more from the Marina. The chauffeur proposes the time.
