Airport transfers · 2026-09-19 · 8-minute read
Al Maktoum International (DWC), at Dubai World Central in the south of the emirate, is the airport Dubai is building for the future - the plans run to the largest airport in the world - and for now a modest single terminal handling a growing schedule of low-cost, charter and seasonal flights, some scheduled European and Asian services, and the busiest private-jet terminal in the region. It sits beside Expo City, the Jebel Ali port and free zone and the Dubai South development, forty kilometres from the old city and closer to the Marina and the Palm than DXB is. This guide explains the terminal, the meeting point, the drive times, the fares and when DWC is the better airport; Dubai International has its own article.
DWC has a single passenger terminal; arriving passengers clear passport control and exit into one arrivals hall, where a pre-booked chauffeur waits with a name board. Drive times: Expo City and Dubai South 5-15 minutes, Jebel Ali 15-25, the Marina and JBR 25-40, the Palm 30-45, Al Barsha 30-45, Downtown and DIFC 40-55, Deira 50-65, DXB 45-60, Abu Dhabi 55-80 - longer in the peak. Indicative fares: executive sedan AED 180-280 to the Marina, AED 220-340 to Downtown; SUV AED 240-360 and AED 280-430; sedan to Abu Dhabi AED 400-620. The metered taxi is AED 90-130 to the Marina. Book on the airport limo service page.
The terminal
DWC's passenger terminal opened in 2013 and handles a fraction of DXB's traffic in a building designed for far more: a single arrivals hall on the ground floor, quick passport control with smart gates, a short walk from the gate to the carousel, and an exit into a hall with a few cafes and the car-hire desks. The airlines using it change with the seasons - Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, flydubai's seasonal routes, some charter and pilgrimage flights, and scheduled services that move between DWC and DXB - and dispatch confirms the airport from the flight number, which matters here more than the terminal, because a chauffeur at DXB for a DWC arrival is an hour's problem. The airport operator's guidance covers both airports. A pre-booked chauffeur stands in the arrivals hall with a name board; the taxi rank is outside with a dispatcher and a short queue; the car park is a two-minute walk.
The VIP terminal
DWC's VIP terminal is the private-aviation gateway for Dubai and the busiest in the Gulf in the winter season, with the FBOs handling the jets of the region's business and royal families and the visitors for the winter's events. The pickup is ramp-side or at the terminal's own door, the vehicles are the Rolls-Royce, the Maybach and the Range Rover, and the private jet and FBO transfers page covers the process, which at DWC is the smoothest in the network.
Drive times
DWC sits at the southern end of the emirate, beside the E11 and the E311; the new city is between it and the old.
| Destination | Normal | Peak (7-9:30 am, 5-8 pm) |
|---|---|---|
| Expo City / Dubai South / the Expo hotels | 5-15 min | 10-25 min |
| Jebel Ali / the free zone / the port | 15-25 min | 25-40 min |
| Jebel Ali Beach (the JA resorts) | 15-25 min | 25-40 min |
| The Marina / JBR / Bluewaters | 25-40 min | 40-65 min |
| The Palm Jumeirah | 30-45 min | 45-70 min |
| Al Barsha / the Mall of the Emirates | 30-45 min | 45-70 min |
| Jumeirah / Umm Suqeim | 35-50 min | 50-80 min |
| Downtown / DIFC / Business Bay | 40-55 min | 60-90 min |
| Deira / Bur Dubai / the Creek | 50-65 min | 70-100 min |
| Dubai International Airport (DXB) | 45-60 min | 65-95 min |
| Abu Dhabi (Yas Island, Saadiyat) | 45-65 min | 60-90 min |
| Abu Dhabi (Downtown, the Corniche) | 55-80 min | 75-105 min |
| Sharjah | 60-80 min | 85-120 min |
The E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road) and the E311 are the routes, and the E11 through the Marina in the evening peak is the constraint; a chauffeur who works the city uses the E311 and Al Khail Road for Downtown when the spine is slow. Salik tolls are included.
DWC or DXB, by district
For a visitor with a choice of flights, the airport should follow the hotel. DWC is right for Expo City, Jebel Ali, the Marina, JBR, the Palm and Al Barsha, and for Abu Dhabi's Yas Island and Saadiyat, which are closer to DWC than to DXB. DXB is right for Deira, Bur Dubai, Downtown, DIFC, Jumeirah and Sharjah, and for anyone connecting on Emirates. For a Marina hotel the DWC transfer is ten to fifteen minutes shorter than the DXB one; for Downtown, twenty-five minutes longer. The flights decide most of it: DWC's schedule is thin and seasonal, DXB's is the world's largest.
What a private transfer costs
Indicatively, in dirhams, with the Gulf's executive tier being the S-Class, the Lexus LS or the GLS:
- Executive sedan to Expo City or Jebel Ali: AED 130-200; to the Marina or the Palm AED 180-280; to Downtown AED 220-340; to Deira AED 250-380.
- Luxury sedan (Maybach, 7 Series long): AED 280-420 to the Marina, AED 350-520 to Downtown.
- Executive SUV (GLS, Range Rover, Escalade): AED 240-360 to the Marina, AED 280-430 to Downtown.
- Executive van (V-Class): AED 240-350 to the Marina; Sprinter: AED 420-650.
- Sedan to DXB: AED 250-380.
- Sedan to Abu Dhabi: AED 400-620; SUV AED 500-760.
- Hourly, sedan: AED 150-250, three-hour minimum.
Salik tolls and airport fees are included; gratuity is not expected. The taxi from DWC is metered at about AED 90-130 to the Marina and AED 130-180 to Downtown, with a queue that is short because the airport is quiet; the comparison is in airport transfer vs taxi. The regional context is in how much does a limo cost.
Expo City, Jebel Ali and Dubai South
DWC's own district has become a destination: Expo City on the former Expo 2020 site, with its pavilions, its conference centre and its hotels, hosts the exhibitions that the World Trade Centre cannot, including the COP28 climate conference in 2023; the Jebel Ali free zone and port are the largest in the region and bring logistics and shipping executives from around the world; and Dubai South is the residential and business district growing around the airport. For each, DWC is the natural airport and the transfer is minutes; the corporate account desk handles the recurring bookings and the executive car service page the product. The JA resorts at Jebel Ali Beach are the nearest leisure hotels, twenty minutes away.
Business travel and the exhibitions
An exhibition at Expo City fills the Dubai South and Marina hotels and commits the southern fleet; the event transportation page handles the group moves and the how early to book article the notice. A delegate landing at DWC for an Expo City conference is a fifteen-minute transfer at AED 130-200, and a delegate landing at DXB for the same conference is an hour at AED 250-380, which is the arithmetic that makes DWC's growing schedule useful.
The return transfer
DWC's departures are the quickest in the emirate: a short walk, a short queue, and an airport that recommends two hours for international flights rather than DXB's three. From the Marina that means a pickup two and three-quarter hours before departure in the peak; from Downtown, three and a quarter. The chauffeur proposes the time; the IATA baggage guidance applies.
RTA licensing and the fleet
Every chauffeured vehicle at DWC holds the RTA's limousine permit, as the Dubai airport transfers article describes; the vehicles are the newest in the network and the luxury car service article explains the Gulf's tiers. The hiring a private driver questions apply, and the what is a chauffeur article describes the standard.
Booking
Enter DWC, the flight number, the hotel's name and district, passengers and bags, and the vehicle in the booker. The fare is shown in dirhams and fixed. The chauffeur's name, photo, vehicle and meeting point arrive by text on the morning. DXB, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah are on the airports page, and the emirates on the destinations page.
Two transfers, priced
A logistics executive landing from Frankfurt on a seasonal flight for three days at the Jebel Ali free zone: an executive sedan - an S-Class - at about AED 160 to a Jebel Ali hotel, met in the hall, twenty minutes on the E11, on a corporate account with daily transfers to the port. A family of six landing on a charter from Manchester for a week at a Marina hotel: a V-Class with two child seats at about AED 300 to JBR, met in the hall, thirty-five minutes on the E11 with the Salik included, against two taxis at AED 110 each that would arrive separately. The Sprinter limo article covers the vehicle for a larger group, and the private driver for a day article the day rate for Abu Dhabi's Louvre and Yas Island, which from DWC are the shortest runs in the emirate.
The seasons
Dubai's winter, from October to April, is the season for DWC's schedule and for the VIP terminal's traffic, and the fleet in the south of the emirate is committed for the events at Expo City and the Dubai Airshow, which is held at DWC itself in odd Novembers and fills every vehicle in Dubai South for the week; the how early to book article sets out the notice and the event transportation page handles the group moves. Summer is quiet at both airports and the bottom of the band, and the how much does a limo cost article places the Gulf below the Western European band for a vehicle a class above.
The short version
One quiet terminal in the south of the emirate; the chauffeur meets you at the exit with a name board; the Marina is thirty minutes and Downtown fifty; the fare is fixed in dirhams with the tolls included and the car is an S-Class; and for the Marina, the Palm, Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi's islands it is the closer Dubai airport. Give the flight number and the booker shows the exact fare.
Licensed operators and the questions to ask
The RTA's permit, the airport's permit, the chauffeur's card and the fixed fare in writing are the four things the hiring a private driver article tells a passenger to check, and in Dubai all four are easy to confirm because the RTA publishes its register. DWC's quietness means fewer touts than DXB, and the chauffeur with a name board at the exit is the licensed one. The what is a chauffeur article describes the standard; the fleet page shows the vehicles, which in the Gulf are the newest in the network, and the contact page reaches a dispatcher who can price a VIP-terminal pickup in a Rolls-Royce against a sedan.
Expo City, for the visitor
Expo City is worth a note of its own because it has become a destination rather than a site: the Al Wasl dome, the pavilions that stayed - Terra, Alif, the Saudi and UAE pavilions - the gardens, the restaurants and the Rove hotel beside the Metro station, ten minutes from the terminal. A visitor to Dubai with a morning to spare between a DWC arrival and a Marina check-in can spend it there, and a chauffeur for the morning at AED 150-250 per hour with a three-hour minimum is the way to do it with the luggage in the boot. The executive car service page covers the corporate product for the conferences held there.
