City guides · 2026-09-19 · 8-minute read

Austin has grown from a university and government town into one of the largest technology cities in the country in fifteen years, and its ground-transport market has grown with it: the campuses in the north and the east, the downtown towers that house the newer headquarters, an airport that was small and is now not, and a calendar - South by Southwest in March, Austin City Limits in October, the Formula 1 Grand Prix in October, the university's football Saturdays - that fills every vehicle in Travis County several times a year. This guide sets out how the limo and black car market works in Austin, what it costs, and how to book it around the calendar.

An Austin limo or black car service is a pre-booked, Texas-licensed sedan, SUV or Sprinter with a professional chauffeur at a fixed fare. From Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) to Downtown expect US$70-115 in a sedan; to East Austin US$60-100; to the Domain US$95-150; to Westlake US$85-135; to Round Rock US$110-170; to the Hill Country (Dripping Springs, Fredericksburg) US$150-350. Hourly hire is US$120-220 with a two-hour minimum. Chauffeurs meet at baggage claim with a name board. Book on the black car service page; Austin is on the destinations page.

Austin-Bergstrom

Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS) sits eight miles south-east of downtown on the site of a former air-force base, with a single main terminal (the Barbara Jordan Terminal) that has been expanded repeatedly and a small South Terminal for a few low-cost carriers. Domestic passengers collect bags on the lower level of the main terminal; international arrivals (Mexico, Canada, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam) clear customs in the terminal and exit into the same lower level. Pre-arranged chauffeurs meet at baggage claim with a name board and walk passengers to the vehicle in the garage across the road or at the designated commercial pickup area; the airport requires a permit and the licensed operators hold it. The airport's own guidance lists the arrangements and the construction, which is continuous as the terminal expands. Rideshare picks up from a designated area on the upper level of the garage; taxis from a rank on the lower level.

I-35 through downtown is one of the most congested stretches of interstate in the country and is being rebuilt for the rest of the decade; MoPac (Loop 1) to the west and the 183 and 130 toll roads are the alternatives, and a chauffeur who works the city knows when the toll road is worth it. The tolls are included in the fare.

What it costs

Austin is in the lower-middle of the North American band, and its prices have risen with the city.

Tolls, airport fees and gratuity are included. The national bands are in how much does a limo cost.

The calendar: SXSW, ACL, F1 and football

Austin's calendar produces the tightest squeezes of any American city of its size. South by Southwest in March fills every hotel within forty miles and every vehicle in the county for ten days; downtown's streets close, the parties run to 3 am, and the event transportation page is the only sensible way to move a team. Austin City Limits over two October weekends does the same at Zilker Park. The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in October brings a hundred thousand visitors to a track ten minutes from the airport whose access roads gridlock on race day; a chauffeured transfer with the track's permit, or a Sprinter for a corporate hospitality group, is the way in and out. The university's football Saturdays close the streets around the stadium. The convention-city rule applies with force: book when the trip is confirmed, weeks ahead for SXSW and F1, and the how early to book article sets out the notice; corporate accounts get priority allocation.

The technology campuses

Austin's business travel runs on the technology industry: the large campuses in the north around the Domain and along the 183 and MoPac corridors, the newer headquarters in the downtown towers, the electric-vehicle plant to the east, the semiconductor plants to the north-east and the venture and start-up scene downtown and in East Austin. The pattern is a transfer from AUS and hourly hire between the campuses and downtown, on a corporate account with the executive car service page product; the hourly chauffeur service page explains the clock. The state government at the Capitol and the university bring their own streams.

The Hill Country, weddings and wine

The Hill Country west of Austin is the region's leisure and wedding market: the venues around Dripping Springs, the wineries along Highway 290 to Fredericksburg, the swimming holes and the small towns. A wine-country day in a Sprinter with nobody driving is the most-booked leisure product in the fleet, at US$2,000-3,600 for the day, and the Sprinter limo article explains the vehicle; the wedding limo service page covers the Dripping Springs weddings, where the guest shuttles from downtown hotels are a forty-five-minute leg and the wedding guest shuttles arithmetic matters. The private driver for a day article has the day-rate context.

Licensing in Texas

Chauffeured vehicles in Austin are licensed by the city's Transportation Department as chauffeured-vehicle operators, with chauffeur permits requiring background checks, and by the airport for pickups; operators carry commercial passenger insurance. A licensed operator gives the permit number on request. The what is a chauffeur article describes the standard; hiring a private driver lists the questions. Rideshare is licensed by the state and picks up at AUS from the garage; during SXSW its surge pricing and its "no cars" screen are the reason the black car market exists.

Private aviation

AUS has FBOs on its west side for private flights, and Austin Executive to the north-east serves the rest; ramp-side pickup is standard and the private jet and FBO transfers page covers it. F1 weekend brings one of the largest concentrations of private aircraft in the country to both.

Booking

In the booker, enter AUS and the flight number, or the address; the destination; passengers and bags; and the vehicle. The fare is fixed. The chauffeur's name, photo, vehicle and meeting point arrive by text on the morning. San Antonio, Houston and Dallas are on the destinations page, and the airports on the airports page.

Departures from Austin-Bergstrom

Outbound, the pickup is built from live traffic on I-35 and the toll roads, the terminal, and the security queue; the TSA publishes estimates and the main terminal's checkpoints on Monday mornings, and on the Sunday after SXSW, ACL and F1, are among the longest in the country for an airport of the size. From downtown allow forty-five minutes to the terminal in the peak and twenty-five off-peak; from the Domain, seventy and forty; from Westlake, sixty and thirty-five. The chauffeur drops at the correct terminal - the main or the South - on the upper level.

Austin's districts, from a chauffeur's seat

Downtown is the Capitol, the newer towers, the convention centre, Sixth Street and Rainey Street, and the large hotels. East Austin is the restaurants, the bars and the boutique hotels across I-35. South Congress is the shopping street and the hotels of the moment; Zilker and Barton Springs the park and the pool beside it. The University and Hyde Park are the campus and the older neighbourhoods north of it. Westlake and Rollingwood are the residential hills across the river with the lake views. The Domain is the northern business and shopping district with the campus hotels. Round Rock, Pflugerville and Cedar Park are the northern suburbs with the technology and semiconductor plants. Lakeway is Lake Travis and its resorts. Dripping Springs is the wedding-venue town in the Hill Country. The destinations page lists the region.

Two bookings, priced

An engineer landing from San Jose for a week at a northern campus: an executive sedan at about US$130 to a Domain hotel, met at baggage claim, forty minutes on the 183 toll road, then hourly hire on two days between the campus and downtown at US$120-220 per hour on a corporate account. A group of ten landing from Dallas for a bachelorette weekend: a lounge Sprinter at about US$260 to a downtown hotel, met at baggage claim, twenty minutes on 71, and the same Sprinter for a Hill Country wine day on the Saturday at about US$2,600 with nobody driving. The how much does a limo cost article places Austin in the lower-middle of the North American band; the limousine bus and party bus article covers the larger party vehicles that Austin's bachelor and bachelorette market keeps busy.

Licensed operators and the festival fringe

SXSW and F1 bring an unlicensed fringe to Austin's ground transport every year - out-of-town vehicles, personal cars with a sign, party buses without the authority - and the questions in hiring a private driver are the way to tell them from the licensed core: the city permit number, the airport permit, the commercial insurance, the chauffeur assigned the night before, the fixed fare in writing. The what is a chauffeur article describes the standard, and the fleet page shows the vehicles that meet it.

The short version

The airport is fifteen minutes from downtown; the chauffeur meets you at baggage claim with a name board; the fare is fixed with the tolls and gratuity included; the northern campuses are forty minutes and the Hill Country an hour; and for SXSW, ACL and the Grand Prix the fleet is committed three weeks ahead. Give the flight number and the booker shows the exact fare.

Two more days, briefly

A conference delegate arriving for a downtown show with a dinner in East Austin and a client in Westlake the next morning is a transfer in, an evening sedan at a fixed fare, and hourly hire the next morning; a family arriving for a graduation weekend at the university is an SUV transfer, a day rate for the ceremony and the dinner with the car waiting, and a transfer out. The private driver for a day article explains when the day rate beats the transfers, and the hourly chauffeur service page the clock.
